ItemValue

Offsets are fixed numbers of hours from UTC. They do not encode daylight-saving rules, which change by place and date.

Formula

Target time = source time − source UTC offset + target UTC offset, wrapped to 24 hours. In minutes: target minutes = hour × 60 + minute − source offset × 60 + target offset × 60; if the result is negative, add 1,440 (24 hours) and count one day earlier; if it reaches 1,440 or more, subtract 1,440 and count one day later.

Offsets in the dropdowns are standard-time examples for the named places. Several places shift by one hour during daylight saving, and governments occasionally change offset rules — the offset that applies on a specific date must be confirmed with an official source for that place and date.

Worked example

09:00 at UTC+8 is 9 × 60 = 540 minutes; 540 − 480 (UTC+8) + (−300) (UTC−5) = −240 minutes. Adding 1,440 gives 1,200 minutes = 20:00, one day earlier — so 09:00 in Beijing is 20:00 the previous day in New York standard time.

Scope and limitations

This page converts times of day using fixed UTC offsets only. It does not know dates, daylight-saving transitions, or historical offset changes, and it cannot tell you whether a given place observes daylight saving on a given date. For scheduling, confirm the offset for the actual date with an official source. Times are given to the minute; seconds are not handled.

FAQ

Does this handle daylight saving?

No. The offsets are fixed numbers. A place on daylight saving is typically one hour ahead of its standard offset — for example New York is UTC−4 on daylight saving instead of UTC−5. Check the offset for your actual date.

Why does the result say 'one day earlier'?

Because subtracting the offsets can push the time before midnight. 09:00 in Beijing is still the previous evening in New York — the day shift makes that explicit instead of silently showing 20:00.

What about half-hour zones?

They are included: UTC+05:30 (India) and UTC+09:30 (Adelaide, standard) are in the dropdowns, and the formula works in minutes so they convert exactly.

Can I convert a full date and time?

Not on this page: it converts a time of day plus a day shift. For a dated event, apply the day shift to your date by hand and confirm daylight saving for that date.

Why is London listed as standard time?

London is UTC+00:00 in winter and UTC+01:00 (British Summer Time) in summer. The dropdown gives the standard offset; pick +01:00 for summer dates.
