Sound Intensity Level
Convert sound intensity to a reference-relative decibel level.
Your numbers
Sound intensity level
Intensity level is not automatically A-weighted sound pressure or a hearing-exposure assessment.
Scenario comparison
Up to three snapshots in this tab. Loading one replaces the current inputs.
Formula
Use L = 10log₁₀(I/Iᵣ). I is sound intensity and Iᵣ is reference intensity in the same unit. Sound intensity level L is in dB.
Convert sound intensity to a reference-relative decibel level.
Worked example
- Sound intensity (W/m²)
- 0.000001
- Reference intensity (W/m²)
- 1e-12
- Sound intensity level
- 60 dB
Scope and limitations
Intensity level is not automatically A-weighted sound pressure or a hearing-exposure assessment.
Inputs are checked for missing values and allowed ranges. A result outside the finite numeric range is not displayed. Rounding affects display, while the calculation uses the model’s numeric precision.
Check your units and assumptions before relying on a result. Changing a label does not convert a currency or physical unit.
