Mixture Equilibrium Temperature
Mix two masses with constant heat capacities and no heat loss.
Your numbers
Equilibrium temperature
Insulated mixture, constant heat capacities, no container heat, no reaction and no phase change.

Formula
Use T = (mₐcₐTₐ+mᵦcᵦTᵦ)/(mₐcₐ+mᵦcᵦ). m denotes mass, c specific heat, and subscripts identify the materials. Tₐ and Tᵦ are initial temperatures in °C; equilibrium temperature T uses the same scale. Assume no heat loss or phase change.
Mix two masses with constant heat capacities and no heat loss.
Worked example
- Mass A (kg)
- 1
- Specific heat A (J/kg·K)
- 4184
- Initial A temperature (°C)
- 80
- Mass B (kg)
- 3
- Specific heat B (J/kg·K)
- 4184
- Initial B temperature (°C)
- 20
- Equilibrium temperature
- 35 °C
Scope and limitations
Insulated mixture, constant heat capacities, no container heat, no reaction and no phase change.
Inputs are checked for missing values and allowed ranges. A result outside the finite numeric range is not displayed. Rounding affects display, while the calculation uses the model’s numeric precision.
Check your units and assumptions before relying on a result. Changing a label does not convert a currency or physical unit.
