Carnot Efficiency Limit
Find the theoretical heat-engine efficiency limit.
Your numbers
Theoretical maximum efficiency
Absolute temperatures required. Real engines have additional losses and lower efficiency.
Scenario comparison
Up to three snapshots in this tab. Loading one replaces the current inputs.
Formula
Use η = 1−T_c/T_h. T_c and T_h are cold and hot reservoir absolute temperatures in K. The theoretical efficiency fraction η is displayed as a percentage; the hot reservoir must be hotter.
Find the theoretical heat-engine efficiency limit.
Worked example
- Hot reservoir temperature (K)
- 600
- Cold reservoir temperature (K)
- 300
- Theoretical maximum efficiency
- 50 %
Scope and limitations
Absolute temperatures required. Real engines have additional losses and lower efficiency.
Inputs are checked for missing values and allowed ranges. A result outside the finite numeric range is not displayed. Rounding affects display, while the calculation uses the model’s numeric precision.
Check your units and assumptions before relying on a result. Changing a label does not convert a currency or physical unit.
