Formula
Average acceleration a = (v₁ − v₀) ÷ t. When acceleration stay constant, signed displacement na s = ((v₀ + v₁) ÷ 2) × t. If velocity change sign, total distance na the distance before plus the distance after the time wey velocity reach zero; e no be absolute displacement. Negative acceleration mean signed velocity dey reduce; speed fit increase or reduce depending on direction. Enter velocity in m/s and time in seconds to get acceleration in m/s² and displacement or distance in metres.
Example wey show the calculation
From rest (0 m/s) reach 30 m/s inside 5 seconds: a = (30 − 0) ÷ 5 = 6.00 m/s². Velocity change na 30 m/s, and distance wey e cover na ((0 + 30) ÷ 2) × 5 = 15 × 5 = 75 m. To understand the size, 6 m/s² na strong car take-off — roughly 0 to 100 km/h inside about 4.6 seconds if the rate stay the same (100 km/h na 27.78 m/s, and 27.78 ÷ 6 = 4.63 s).
Where e fit work and limits
This page calculate average acceleration over the interval, with assumption say e stay constant. Real acceleration usually dey change (engine pull dey reduce as speed increase), so this result na average, no be peak. Na one-dimensional model, and e support reversal along that axis. E no cover curved paths, circular motion or vector components across many axes. Time must pass zero — instant change (t = 0) go imply infinite acceleration, wey this page reject instead of displaying am.
Questions wey people dey ask often
Wetin be the difference between velocity and acceleration?
Velocity show how fast something dey move; acceleration show how fast that velocity dey change. Car wey maintain 30 m/s get high velocity but zero acceleration. The same car wey dey increase from 0 to 30 m/s get positive acceleration as the speed dey rise.
Wetin negative acceleration mean?
Negative acceleration point along the negative axis. E reduce speed when velocity dey positive, but increase speed when velocity dey negative. If velocity cross zero, the object slow down, turn back, then speed up.
Why the unit na m/s²?
Na because acceleration na change for velocity for each unit of time: (m/s) ÷ s = m/s². You fit read am as metres per second for each second — every second, velocity dey increase by that number of m/s.
How force take relate to dis?
Newton second law say force = mass × acceleration. Car wey get mass of 1,000 kg and acceleration of 6 m/s² need net force of 6,000 N. Dis page no collect mass, so e no fit calculate force.
I fit use km/h instead of m/s?
Only after you convert am: divide km/h by 3.6 to get m/s, and change the time to seconds. If you mix km/h with seconds, the result no go be m/s². The conversions for velocity calculator fit help.
9.8 m/s² get special meaning?
Yes — na g, gravity near Earth surface. Object wey dey fall freely, if we leave air resistance out, dey accelerate downwards at about 9.81 m/s². Enter v₀ = 0, v₁ = 9.81, t = 1 to check am.
