Breakdown

Amount

The fixed discount is applied after the percentage discount, and the final price is floored at zero — it can never go negative.

At a glance

The two bars together equal the original price. A larger saving bar means a deeper effective discount.

Final price at different discounts

DiscountFinal price

Original price and extra discount are held at the values above; only the percentage discount changes across rows.

Formula

Final price = original price × (1 − discount rate) − additional fixed discount, floored at zero. Amount saved = original price − final price.

Worked example

Original price $100, discount 20%, extra discount $5: final price = $100 × (1 − 0.20) − $5 = $80 − $5 = $75, so you save $25, an effective 25.00% off.

Scope and limitations

Tax, shipping, minimum-spend rules, coupon order, and exclusions may change the checkout total. If a store applies the fixed discount before the percentage discount, the result differs slightly — this calculator applies the percentage first, as stated in the formula.

FAQ

How does the discount calculator work?

Final price = original price × (1 − discount rate) − additional fixed discount, floored at zero. The percentage comes off first, then the fixed amount.

In what order are the discounts applied?

Percentage first, then the fixed discount. Reversing the order changes the result when both are present, so check the store's order if the total differs by a small amount.

Can the final price go below zero?

No. If the discounts exceed the price, the result is floored at $0.00 and the saving is capped at the original price.

Does this include tax?

No. Tax is normally charged on the discounted price, so add tax afterwards — or use the sales tax calculator on the final price shown here.

What is the effective discount?

Total saving divided by the original price. With a 20% discount plus $5 off $100, the effective saving is 25%, not 20%.

What about minimum-spend or excluded items?

Not modeled. If the discount only applies above a spend threshold or excludes some items, the checkout total will differ.
