Calories by duration, at a glance

Bars scale linearly with duration because the formula is linear in minutes. Bars are scaled to the 60-minute value.

Formula

Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes. One MET is the energy cost of sitting quietly; an activity rated 6 MET is treated as six times that cost.

Worked example

Activity 6 MET, weight 65 kg, duration 45 minutes: calories = 6 × 3.5 × 65 ÷ 200 × 45 = 6.825 × 45 = 307.1 kcal. That is 6.83 kcal per minute and 409.5 kcal per hour at the same intensity and weight. Use Reset example above to reproduce this result.

Scope and limitations

MET values are population averages for an activity, not measurements of your session: fitness, technique, equipment, terrain, and individual physiology all shift the true value. The formula assumes a constant intensity for the whole duration, so intervals, pauses, and changing effort are averaged away. It also counts gross expenditure, including the energy you would have used at rest during the same minutes.

FAQ

What is a MET?

A multiple of resting energy cost. Sitting quietly is 1 MET; an activity rated 6 MET is treated as costing six times as much energy per minute.

Why is this only an estimate?

Because the MET figure is an average across people, and your efficiency, fitness, and equipment differ from that average.

Does it include resting calories?

Yes — the result is gross expenditure, which includes the energy you would have used at rest during those minutes.

What if my effort varied?

The formula assumes one constant intensity. For mixed sessions, split the time by intensity and add the parts, or treat the result as an average-intensity approximation.

Is my data stored?

No. This calculation runs locally in your browser and the values you enter are not sent to a CalcMintly database.

How do I pick a MET value?

Use a published MET compendium value for the activity as performed — the same activity done harder or with load carries a higher MET.
