Bars are scaled to the 30-day value and grow linearly because the nightly shortfall is held constant.
Nightly shortfall = max(target nightly hours − actual average hours, 0). Sleep debt = nightly shortfall × days. If actual sleep meets or exceeds the target, the shortfall is zero and no debt accumulates in this calculation.
Target 8 hours, actual average 6.5 hours, 14 days: nightly shortfall = 8 − 6.5 = 1.5 hours. Debt = 1.5 × 14 = 21 hours — 10.5 hours per week, or 2.63 nights of 8-hour sleep. Use Reset example above to reproduce this result.
This page does only hour arithmetic: it multiplies a constant nightly shortfall by a number of days. It does not measure sleep quality, account for varying nights (the actual figure is an average), or model recovery — a debt of hours is not repaid hour-for-hour by extra sleep in any simple sense, and this page does not claim otherwise. It is not a diagnosis, treatment plan, or clinical category, and it does not assess any sleep condition.
The accumulated difference between a nightly target and actual average sleep, multiplied by the number of days. Nothing more: it is hour arithmetic, not a medical measure.
In this arithmetic, yes — raising the actual average reduces the nightly shortfall. In reality, recovery is not a simple hour-for-hour repayment, which is one limit of the model.
Then the shortfall is floored at zero and no debt accumulates. The page does not bank a surplus.
Because nightly sleep varies. Enter the average over the period so the multiplication reflects the period as a whole rather than a single night.

No. This page cannot assess any condition; a large hour total is only a large hour total.
