Where your BMI sits

Standard adult cut-offs: underweight below 18.5, healthy weight 18.5–24.9, overweight 25.0–29.9, obesity 30.0 and above. The bar is scaled to 40 so higher values stay visible.

Formula

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25. Ponderal Index = weight (kg) ÷ height³ (m³). The healthy-weight range is the weight range that gives a BMI of 18.5–24.9 at your height.

Worked example

Height 5 ft 8.9 in (175.0 cm) and weight 160.1 lb (72.6 kg): height in metres is 1.750 m, so BMI = 72.6 ÷ 1.750² = 23.7, which is in the healthy-weight range. BMI Prime = 23.7 ÷ 25 = 0.95, Ponderal Index = 72.6 ÷ 1.750³ = 13.5 kg/m³, and the healthy-weight range at this height is 56.7–76.3 kg (124.9–168.1 lb). Use Reset example above to reproduce this result.

Scope and limitations

BMI is a screening measure for adults, not a diagnosis and not a direct measure of body fat. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so it can misclassify very muscular or very slight builds, and it does not apply in the same way to children, whose categories use age- and sex-specific percentiles. Height and weight are taken as entered; no other personal circumstances are modelled.

FAQ

What do the adult categories mean?

Underweight is below 18.5, healthy weight is 18.5–24.9, overweight is 25.0–29.9, and obesity is 30.0 and above. These are the standard interval definitions, used here only as labels for the computed number.

Does a BMI outside the healthy range mean something is wrong?

No — not by itself. BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It says nothing about body composition, fitness, or health on its own.

What is BMI Prime?

BMI divided by 25, the top of the healthy range. A value of 1.00 sits exactly at that boundary; 0.95 is 5% below it.

Why does the metric equivalent differ slightly from my entry?

Converting feet/inches/pounds to centimetres/kilograms rounds to one decimal place. The underlying calculation uses the full converted values, so display rounding does not change the result.

Is my data stored?

No. This calculation runs locally in your browser and the values you enter are not sent to a CalcMintly database.

Can I use this for a child?

No. Children's BMI is interpreted against age- and sex-specific growth percentiles, which this page does not model.
